A CLEARER NEXT STEP

Dry texting. Is he busy, or are you carrying the conversation?

You send a little story. He sends ‘nice’. You ask about his day. ‘Good.’ There's nothing openly wrong with his replies, but there's nothing to work with either. Dry texting is when a conversation keeps coming back short, flat and hard to continue. The useful question isn't how to make your next message more interesting. It's whether he's giving you anything back.

What it usually means

  1. He's distracted right now. A few short replies during work or a busy afternoon can simply mean he has little room for a chat. Notice whether he comes back when he has time.
  2. Texting isn't where he's most comfortable. Some people are brief on a screen and warm in person. If he makes plans, follows through and pays attention when you're together, that matters more than his message length.
  3. He's answering, but not building a conversation. Replies aren't the same as effort. If you supply every question and every new topic, he's leaving you to keep the connection going.
  4. His interest may have changed. One ‘yeah’ won't tell you that. A steady drop in warmth, curiosity and follow-through gives you more to go on than a single dry reply.

What it doesn't mean

  • That you're boring. You don't need to perform your way into a two-person conversation.
  • That a long reply would prove he cares. Someone can write paragraphs and still avoid making time for you.

What to do

Stop adding a new question every time the chat runs out of room. Let one exchange end. If you want to see him, ask something concrete rather than trying to revive ‘how's your day?’ for the third time. If the pattern keeps bothering you, name it once without turning it into an accusation. Then look at what changes, not just how reassuring his answer sounds.

3 replies, if you want to send one

Warm

“You seem a bit busy today. Let's catch up when you've got more time 🙂”

Neutral

“Fancy catching up in person this week? I'm free Thursday.”

Firm

“I like talking to you, but lately I'm keeping the conversation going on my own. I'd like a bit more back.”

When it's worth paying attention

Compare his texts with the rest of the connection. Brief replies plus real plans are different from brief replies plus constant vagueness. If you stop carrying the chat and nothing happens, you don't have to send a better opener to erase what you've noticed. You can want a connection that meets you halfway.

FAQ

What does dry texting mean?

It means short, low-engagement replies that leave little room to continue: one-word answers, no questions back, or repeated ‘haha’. It's a description of the conversation, not a diagnosis of his feelings.

Does dry texting mean he's not interested?

Sometimes, but compare it with his effort elsewhere. Does he initiate, make plans and follow through? A brief texter who shows up is different from someone who gives you very little everywhere.

How do you respond to a dry text?

You can let the exchange end, suggest a concrete plan, or name the pattern calmly. You don't need to answer every short reply with another question.
